We are going to try to resist commenting on Hotel Unique's name, as it should be obvious enough from the photos that it is an appropriate one. The design is inescapable — the structure is by Niemeyer protegé Ruy Ohtake (himself one of Brazil's most famous architects) and takes the form of a half-disc, flat at the top, like a penny perched on its edge, with the top half sawn off. The result is not just a striking silhouette, but an ingenious way to skirt the 85-meter maximum height restriction, while concentrating its guest rooms toward the top for ideal city views — in fact there are only 4 rooms on the narrow second floor, and 30 on the top floor.
Alternately, the hotel resembles a cartoon boat — the face is weathered copper, with circular porthole windows, and the curved underbelly that would be the ship's bow and stern are paneled in wood. Ribbon-thin sheets of concrete anchor the fore and aft to the ground (and guard against the seeming possibility of the whole thing rolling over). The rooftop lounge is floored in wood, like the deck of an old ship, and the water is up here as well in the form of a deep crimson swimming pool (which, we admit, seems a bit more decorative than functional).
It was a matter of much controversy that Ohtake was not allowed to design the interiors, but designer João Armentano's gain is ours as well — his restrained spaces aim to balance Ohtake's flair for the dramatic, and the result is unexpectedly harmonious and relaxed.
Still, this is a self-consciously hip boutique hotel, and the decor is highly modern, anything but conservative. Reception, rather than the typical imposing monolith, is just a couple of chairs around a small table with a bottle of chilled champagne. The guest rooms may not be as overstated as the structure, but they have their own daring flourishes. Rooms at the edges curve with the outer wall's arc, and furnishings extend mischievously into the upper corners. The bathrooms are a bit avant-garde, with sliding dividers separating (or not separating) them from the bedrooms transparent bathtubs — just make sure you are traveling with someone you know well, or would not mind getting to know better.
A tip for travelers: São Paulo is a large city, and probably South America's most sophisticated. But the weak currency and the over-saturated hotel market are good news for foreigners. If this hotel were in New York, Miami, or just about anywhere in Europe, it would be booked months in advance. Unique, by contrast, always seems to have a room, and for quite a bit less than you might be prepared to pay.

The hotel is really "unique"
by Nuriye from East Northport
Stayed May 2008
Overall rating: Excellent

The check in procedure was superb.
The mess at the airport, the traffic ..and then when you enter the hotel it feels like heaven. The spacious - I mean spacious- entrance/looby/front desk is sooo serene.
The courtesy of the staff. Without getting bored you listen to every detail they tell you about how stuff works in the room. How they enjoy their job is so obvious.
Loved every detail in the room. Especially the bathroom. I Disliked
The concierge services is poor. It was my first time in Sao Paulo and they could not advice me what to see, what to do. I was very disappointed. Becuase of their poor sugestions I did not experience the city.

The hotel is truly an urban oasis. The rooftop pool is amazing and the indoor pool is even better (It was a total surprise since I did not even know there was one until I went to explore the hotel).
We had lunch there and the food was also excellent.
We got upgraded upon arrival and got a large room that was really nice. Beautiful bathroom, great views of the city and very high tech. THe building is an architectural masterpiece in itself.I Disliked
I thought that a drinks were excesively expensive, but definitely good. I guess you pay for the amazing atmosphere.

Review
The hotel was fabulous and certainly unique in design and benefited from an excellent restaurant and bar and super roof-top pool. The views of the city from the roof were superbe. However, I have two major complaints that is common to alot of "design" or "boutique" hotels. Firstly, there was no coffee/tea facility in the room or complimentary in the lounge area, and no nearby local coffee shop. I object to paying $10 for a cup of coffee. Secondly, there were no draws! My partner and I were staying for 5 nights!!!! Also, no iron or board!!!!

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?
The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. A personal opinion or recommendation
Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews writen by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.
We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
