Once upon a time, on a sunny day at the Hotel de Russie, you might have spotted Pablo Picasso or Jean Cocteau peeling and eating the oranges that they picked in the hotel garden. After a sixty-year hiatus, the Russie has re-emerged and is still a languid spot. While you won't catch today's Picassos and Cocteaus (or models and film stars, more likely) behaving with quite the same hedonism, you might catch them loafing in the lobby library flipping through the International Herald Tribune.

Rome is known as a lively, sometimes frantic place — bumper to bumper traffic and hot, salty scents. But though the Russie is in the city center—across the street from the Spanish Steps and overlooking the Piazza del Popolo—the hotel itself is tranquil. The screeches of mopeds are curiously absent. Service is discreet. Even the furniture is quiet — modern, but unpretentious. Order your wine from room service and sip it slowly from a gigantic glass the size of a fish bowl, or book a treatment at the spa — the only luxury spa in all of Italy. Of course, the best time to stay at the Russie is when the weather is at its nicest — from late spring to early fall. Then, you can breakfast on cornettos and milky espresso on the patio. And in the evenings, drink Prosecco on your terrace (providing you're flush enough to score one) while listening to music drift up from the Piazza below.

The hotel probably got its name, by the way, from Russian luminaries who hid out here — everyone from Igor Stravinsky to the Ballet de Russie and the Romanoffs. Maybe that's also why they designed such an inconspicuous facade when they built it in 1818 (be warned that the Russie is easy to miss). But what's inside the front gate will stun you: 30,000 feet of landscape, as opulent and manicured as a theatrical backdrop with palm trees, yews, climbing roses, Roman ruins, and, in the distance, the Villa Borghese gardens. Good weather providing, it's easy to linger here forever — especially considering that there's a bar serving cocktails and sandwiches. Just try to refrain from picking the oranges.

The terasse of the hotel wa great, the location is great: next to the shopping area, the the Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Poppolo...

I Disliked

hotel de Russie Rome

by Michael from Carrickfergus

Overall rating: Excellent

Stayed April 2008

I Liked

very helpful staff, excellent location, second mortgage required to eat & drink in the hotel itself, but have at least one meal in the garden area, sheer bliss. Overall the hotel was charming and not overpowering. Lots of good shopping & eateries everywhere. Spa facility was good but the pool area itself was small, perhaps thats why the called it a hydropool?

I Disliked

nothing to dislike.

Would have expected a little more from such a world class hotel!

by Margrethe from Oslo

Overall rating: Fair

Stayed April 2008

I Liked

Beautiful interior, beautiful room (we had a corner-studio with a veiw to the piazza del popolo) and bathroom. The gardens are lovely, but I was surprised there was no pool (my young niese and nephew also staying at the hotel were diappointed). We were received very professionally and efficiently at the front desk, and the concierge was very helpful making dinner reservations for us. The spa had excellent therapists, and a wonderful saltwater jacuzzi. Excellent location in Rome - with walking distance to many great restaurants and shopping area, and a taxistand right outside the hotel making it easy to get taxis in an otherwise pedestrian-dominated area.

I Disliked

The waiters at the outdoor bar were diappointing - forgetting orders, misunderstanding ( we ordered a bottle of wine and three glasses as well as a martini for four people, the waiter came back with four glasses of wine and no bottle or martini), another occasion the waiter did not paying attention when we were trying to ask for the bill - I would have expected more from such a world class hotel! That said, we were compensated for the poor service by receiving a bottle of champagne in our room later that evening. The breakfast buffet lacked typical italian food as parmaham and salami (although maybe not italians have this for breakfast, tourists do...). Ordering breakfast to our room the last day, an order of omelettes was forgotten, and when retrieved, the eggs were cold. The steam room in the spa was so hot that I found it impossible to enter (and I love steamrooms...)

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
