The Pelham is a fine alternative to the flash and preciousness of some of London’s more overtly designed boutique hotels—it can be exhausting to spend time in a place that is striving so hard to be cool, and in contrast, it’s utterly refreshing to stay somewhere a little more restrained, a little more secure in itself.
The vibe is plainly country house, transplanted to busy South Kensington: an idea which in itself implies some level of gimmickry, but is in fact carried off with a natural ease. It’s no country house theme park—the rustic touches are judiciously applied, mixing contemporary pieces with antiques, and steering well clear of 19th-century fussiness.
Bedrooms are individually designed (must be an obscure London regulation) but all are richly decorated in a similar grand yet tasteful style. Modern equipment abounds as well, from broadband internet to mobile phones, and the television—long the bane of hotel room decorators—is discreetly hidden. Expect marble bathrooms, of course, but with added charms like heated towel bars and Molton Brown amenities.
The location is easily half the appeal, as the Victoria & Albert and Natural History museums are close by, as are Harrods and the Knightsbridge shops. This convenient situation makes the Pelham’s bar and restaurant a popular stop not just for tourists but for Londoners as well, and if you haven’t seen enough of him already you may spy the likes of Hugh Grant stopping in for a meal. South Kensington tube station is steps away, which means relatively easy access to Heathrow and anywhere else—hard to believe this country charmer is so close to the heart of the city.
Perfect West End location for my business conference. Entrance and reception area is small and homelike, the wonderful opposite of big convention hotels. Very cozy and comfortable bedroom, plush without being ostentatiously luxe. Very friendly service from all staff. Had delicious lunch, drinks, and snacks in the pretty downstairs restaurant, which was surprisingly always almost empty.
I Disliked
Expensive daily charge for Internet access service - highway robbery for captive guests. And, a very nice and helpful young man who was acting as night concierge, but didn't know the first thing about basic train schedules or how to look them up, and advised I should arrange a hired car to get to Waterloo station the next morning - which turned out to be twice the price of an easily available taxi.
I have stayed at sister properties several times. The rooms here were as nice though the staff was not as warm or helpful. In addition, there seemed to be no difference between the my room and my friends (next door) except the cost ($100 more for them) and perhaps that I heard the underground that much more.
We had a tremendous time. It was my partner's 60th birthday while we stayed at the Pelham and to our surprise, there was champagne and gifts in the room when we returned to the room that afternoon. It was an unbelievable gesture. The location is excellent. The front staff was excellent. The concierge suggested a restaurant in the neighborhood and it was exactly what we wanted. We have never stayed here before, we usually stay at Number 16 around the corner. We will definitely come back to the Pelham
I stayed twice and the first time I thought I'd found London hotel nirvana! I booked the cheapest room they had to find it was absolutely lovely! The location was GREAT in rocking Sth Knsingtn, an excellent breakfast included...quiet rooms. Perfect! But the 2nd time I stayed, some cracks started to show. Booked the same class of room to find it not half as nice. Turned out they'd upgraded me 1st time. I mentioned this & they very nicely upgraded me again. Lovely rm BUT constant rumble of Tube trains audible all night. Also 20 POUNDS a day Internet fee ($45!!) So, still v good but not nirvana!
Room was a bit small, but comfortable. The staff was very helpful and eager to please. Public areas were very cozy, but again small and could be crowded depending on time of day. Pelham is fine option in London, but not a hotel where one can lounge about and relax.
The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:
Original
Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.
Relevant to other travelers
This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.
A personal opinion or recommendation
Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.
We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.
Non-commercial
Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.
Written with standard e-mail etiquette
This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
