Though a rated historical building, the sixties office block that housed the Sanderson fabrics company is not the most elegant facade for a stylish boutique hotel. Fortunately the interiors find Starck and Schrager in rare form, raising their game a bit to stand out in this most competitive of hotel markets. Though constrained a bit by the building’s landmark status (right down to the name, which was the path of least resistance considering the old Sanderson sign had to stay) they have created what may be their partnership’s most urbane and elegant environment yet.

Guest rooms are open plan, with that favorite of Starck tricks, the panoptical bathroom — be prepared to know your traveling companion very well indeed by the end of the stay. But though the layout may be hypermodern, the furnishings themselves provide some historical grounding, including sleigh beds and ceiling-mounted oil paintings, as well as rugs patterned after enlargements of Voltaire’s letters. The result is no less whimsical than the typical Starck room, though perhaps a bit more subtle in execution, and the details save the all-white scheme from bordering on the clinical.

Downstairs, though, all bets are off, from the Dali-inspired red-lipped sofa to the glowing onyx Long Bar to the Agua Bathhouse, which crosses over into the Kubrickian all-white territory where the guest rooms feared to tread. Don’t fret, though, it’s perfectly relaxing, as long as you’re thinking of heaven (the designer’s intent) rather than A Clockwork Orange. The SUKA restaurant serves a Malaysian-European fusion at long communal tables and out on the garden terrace. Any Schrager venture strives to be the place to be seen — the Sanderson is no different, and, as usual, it succeeds.

Sanderson Hotel-July 2008

by Samantha from Vancouver

Stayed July 2008

I Liked

I would NEVER stay at this hotel again. They apologized for each mistake but there were just too many things that went wrong during the week I stayed there.

I Disliked

-bathrobe and bathmat were both ripped -maid threw away an Hermes shopping bag (she took out the boxed gift), which contained a handwritten card and Hermes wrapping in it. This was a gift that a friend had left in my room and clearly not garbage! They gave me a free breakfast for the mistake, which I found insulting. -called manager on duty twice, and didn't get a call back -phone keys didn't work properly -day I was leaving, room service forgot to pick up my order on door from night before and therefore my room service did not show up

Great Style, Comfortable, Some Flaws

by Zach from San Diego

Overall rating: Good

Stayed April 2008

I Liked

The design of the lobby, the bars, the restaurant and the room were all great. We had a wonderful time and a great meal at the restaurant in the Sanderson and an even better time in the guests-only purple bar. There, I found one of the most knowledgeable and professional bartenders I have met in my travels.

I Disliked

Overall, a very cool hotel but a few things went wrong right away: 1) The toilet was broken in our room, but they fixed it right away 2) The shower drain wasn't working well enough and there was flooding 3) the bellman said he was going to have the concierge make a dinner reservation for us - that did not happen.

Review

Stay was very good. However concierge was quite poor and not available on arrival or on departure and staff in the residents bar seemed more intrested in catching up with each other than serving. However the main bar and restuarant were superb and the team were very attentive as were check in/out team. Only improvement to room would be an area to eat as there was no table apart from narrow side table behind bed. Would rate overall as 15 out of 20.

Overall rating: Excellent

Review

The Sanderson was far superior to its sister hotel The Hudson in every way, shape and form, I felt at home and totally cared for there. Gracious and helpful staff and overall great attitude permeated the entire hotel. At the same time I believe I will look for another option in NY as The Hudson doesn't give me any of those feelings and the rooms are not close to the quality of the room at The sanderson.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
