St Martins Lane was the first Morgans Hotel Group/Philippe Starck collaboration on English shores, moving into Covent Garden a few months ahead of its younger sister, Soho’s Sanderson. The concept (at both hotels) is Urban Resort, and there’s no question guests walk into a different world upon entering, a world furnished with golden tooth-shaped seats, life-size chess pieces and hanging bare lightbulbs. Starck’s trademark irreverence may not look as novel as it did a few years ago, but it certainly sets a tone, quite a contrast to the English urban-country-house norm.

Rooms are loft-style, open-plan, with a custom-designed lighting system allowing guests to set the mood with light in any color of the spectrum, emanating almost magically from a projector behind the headboard, an arrangement that makes use of the blank canvas provided by the rooms’ all-white color scheme. Windows are floor-to-ceiling, allowing for impressive views of central London—one of the benefits of retrofitting a Sixties office block rather than some Georgian landmark. As in any loft-style building, corner rooms will see the most light, and while at many hotels the “garden rooms” are those with inferior views, here it means something different; an outdoor patio with a touch of greenery provides a breath of fresh air.

A Morgans hotel without a chic and in-demand restaurant would be unthinkable—this one has two, the tried-and-true Asia de Cuba and the newcomer Tuscan Steak, which is exactly what it sounds like, except for the Tuscan part. Two Starck-designed bars round out the social life, which draws at least as many locals as guests. St Martins Lane lacks one thing the Sanderson has, which is a spa; then again this location is a shopper’s paradise—in choosing between the two, the key, ultimately, is Covent Garden or Soho?

Aslam's Review

by Aslam from New Delhi

Overall rating: Good

Stayed August 2008

I Liked

Style and location are outstanding. The turndown service is very good, except the last time I stayed, the curtains were not drawn in properly. The rooms are small (as in most London hotels) but if you get an upgrade to a larger room, then this is one of the best hotels to stay in London.

I Disliked

Standard room are too small

St. Martins Lane 98 out of 100

by Mark from Sherman Oaks

Overall rating: Good

Stayed July 2008

I Liked

The restaurant Asia de Cuba is consistently good. The ability to use Gym Box next door is very convenient. The staff is very attentive and friendly.

I Disliked

The video and music in the elevator has to go, they tried to be artsy and eclectic and achieved ANNOYING, so annoying I actually cringe before entering the elevator and other guests were making fun of the video short film playing. Also, there must be a a version of Charmin in the UK, for a hotel that really gets it right, their toilet paper is "grating".

Stunning Hotel, but left with no sleep and a rash

by Joann from Seattle

Stayed May 2008

I Liked

The public spaces and the rooms were stunning. I won't take that away from the hotel. Honestly, it was fancy, and decedent and everything that you would expect from a hotel that costs nearly $1000USD a night.

I Disliked

Basically, there were 2 things I feel the need to report - at 3am in the morning, there was loud banging on the door next to mine. A couple was having a fight and although I called and asked the concierge to please attend to it, it went on for 15 minutes and the concierge never came. In the morning, when I got out of bed, I discovered that I had a rash all over my body. I hadn't been anywhere else before then and hadn't eaten anything unusual, so I am certain it came from the hotel. When I called the hotel the next day to tell them about this issue, they passed me to housekeeping and then back to the front desk and no compensation or sincere apologies were made. I had been very excited to stay at the hotel. It was a special occasion and I was extremely disappointed that the management of the hotel didn't try to make up for it in any way. For such an upscale hotel, I just would have expected more attention paid to their clients. I am sorry to post such a negative report on your site, but it seems that the hotel didn't want to hear it, so maybe someone else will.

Good value for central London

by Mehboob from Richmond Hill

Overall rating: Good

Stayed April 2008

I Liked

Atmosphere, food and overall service

I Disliked

Layout of room. While the rooms were fair size for central London hotels, the layout could be much better.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
