In Mexico the big resorts might be the path of least resistance, but at this late date anyone who’s looking for something with a bit more personality has no excuses. With so much coastline it can’t all belong to the big developers — some of it, thankfully, goes to more sensitive proprietors, people like Imanta, whose Punta de Mita resort combines castaway seclusion with contemporary villa comforts.

It’s not far from Puerto Vallarta, but from within its stone-walled villas, on a densely forested hillside just above the sea, it feels remote indeed. It’s surrounded by a nature reserve comprising miles and miles of rainforest, and flanked by a pair of long sandy beaches. And the villas do their best to remain tucked away within the foliage, lending an extra measure of privacy to what’s already a very private experience. Even the basic casas span 2,500 square feet, with smart custom furnishings and plenty of indoor and outdoor space, while the Casona Los Templos and the Casona Jaguar are full-scale residences with full-size private swimming pools.

Two restaurants serve anything from fresh Pacific seafood to tapas, either on the beach, in the dining room, or on the rooftop at Observatorio, with its 360-degree views of the jungle and the sea. And all that ocean and rainforest isn’t just there to be looked at — from hikes and nature walks to snorkeling or yachting or even swimming with dolphins, the landscape and seascape are Punta de Mita’s playground.
