Heaven knows Playa del Carmen could use a bit of fashion. This Riviera Maya beach town isn’t exactly off the beaten path, and its hotels and resorts — with some notable exceptions, of course — are a mixed bag. Still, it’s not Cancùn, not by a long shot; and the proliferation of small, distinctive, independent boutique hotels — hotels like this one, the In Fashion Hotel Boutique — is a big part of the reason why.
The location is central, just off 5th Street, set back a block or two from the beach. And once you’re inside you’re treated to a look that’s — well, it’s hard not to say fashionable. It’s a bit minimal, which suits the public spaces well, as they’re practically gallery spaces, packed with all manner of contemporary artworks (including the occasional fashion exhibit, sensibly enough).
It’s not an unstylish little enclave. Forty-two suites are eclectically decorated, in bold graphic schemes, with the occasional thoughtful luxury touch. The ground floor is home to a steakhouse and a nightclub, which serves as In Fashion's social anchor. There’s a central pool, around which the suites are oriented, and another on the rooftop, which is where you'll also find Casting, the rooftop bar. Beach access is sorted as well — the arrangement is a bit Cannes-style, with In Fashion guests granted passes to a nearby private beach club.
