It is time to go back to New Orleans: if not for the Mardi Gras shops selling Comme des Garcons, and fusion cuisine replacing the beignet. International House hotel still manages to fuse old and new successfully — it is modern without being obnoxious, stylish without being frigid. It is, in fact, one of those most rare things in life, a boutique hotel with soul.

Yes, svelte doormen dressed in monochromatic Banana Republic suits guard the entrance. The inside is done in the neutral palette and style made so popular by Christian Liaigre—textured cream fabrics, pale wood floors, gauzy white drapes and rattan rugs. The restaurant, Lemongrass Café, is pan-Asian. The gift shop, Ren, is named for the Chinese character for humankind. But there is more to this modishness than meets the eye. International House has not relinquished its past, or its rich New Orleans heritage.

In the lobby, ornate pillars and decorative moldings are copied from the original 1906 blueprints, when this building was a bank. Chandeliers are based on 19th-century models, and the softly glowing gaslights outside the entrance are copied from 1918 drawings. The lobby is a gallery of old black-and-white photos and the front desk carries a library of classic jazz CD’s. Some rooms (the best) have an old-fashioned cast iron balcony, from which you can watch the French Quarter traffic, dangling wisteria from your fingers. And on the penthouse rooftop terraces the air is redolent with the Louisiana scent of bougainvillea, magnolia, and vetiver.

Then, of course, there’s the voodoo. Every night, the bar holds a welcome ceremony for the spirits with candles, thrift shop seats, and mirrors made of old church windows serving as an altar. And the usual romantic weekend package is given a, ahem, magic spin. A real live voodoo priestess can be hired for you very own love ceremony. Just give International House 30 days notice, a few fingernail clippings and locks of hair and she’ll ensure that your spirits are eternally joined. Now if that isn’t a taste of old New Orleans, we don’t know what is.

Perfect if you don't need much service!

By hcheung312583 based in Los Angeles

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The rooms are clean and large with lots of light and minimal furniture. It felt calming and cleansing after coming back in from the hot, sweaty New Orleans streets. You 100% have to stay on the top floors on a weekend as the music from the bar is incredibly loud until the wee hours of the morning. Aveda products in the bathroom and ipod stereos are nice touches. The powerful air conditioning is great.

I Disliked

This place had one employee at the desk who didn't offer to help with the luggage- presumably because he couldn't leave the desk as no one else was there. Two staff members would have been nice.

Frank

understaffed and unfriendly

By Frank based in New York

Stayed May 2009

I Liked

Lobby and bar are beautiful, the location near - but not inside - the French Quarter is perfect. Great rates.

I Disliked

They don't have enough staff. People at the Front Desk are rather unfriendly. Our bed was really uncomfortable, felt like a very old, supersoft matress. I didn't sleep very well. They wouldn't offer breakfast after 9 am, not even a coffee. Sorry, but Motel 6 does better.

Great New Orleans Stay!

By lbrunt based in Dallas

Stayed April 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

Great atmosphere, great bar with yummy cocktails. The room was nice and the bed very comfortable. It was stylish and modern in look/feel, but still welcoming and comfortable. It was an easy walk to the french quarter, but out of the fray when we wanted to be.

I Disliked

We got up at 10 saturday and called for room service and they don't have it past 9:30. Seemed really odd in New Orleans. It looked like there was a roof top bar or something on the web site but there is not one at the hotel.

Indifferent

By vespahbodi based in London

Stayed March 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

Discreetly nice. In the heart of downtown/canal st. Clean, nice bar, friendly staff. Free wireless and desktop in lobby.

I Disliked

Wasn't a big fan of the room. Quality of bed and linens. Awoken by honking horns every morning. Front desk couldn't provide tasteful suggestions, where to eat or shop. Given the mainstream when other friends suggested some nearby gems.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
