The sequel to the Philippe Starck-designed JIA Hong Kong is a new direction for a successful franchise. JIA Shanghai is more a luxury-residence concept, at least in the design, courtesy of the Australian firm Hecker Phelan & Guthrie — it’s a fully serviced boutique hotel, just like its sister in Hong Kong, but with perhaps a bit more of a discreet apartment-house atmosphere.
It’s located in a well-preserved Twenties apartment building, a subdued exterior for a contemporary-design boutique. And inside it edges closer to design-magazine luxe, with bold graphic color schemes, an impressive collection of modern furnishings, and bathrooms decked out in marble and Bisazza mosaic tile. Rooms and suites are bright and sunny, especially those with balconies, and all come with entertainment centers, and free wireless internet, as well as a smattering of local color in the form of Chinese antiques.
You’re by no means obligated to fend for yourself in that kitchenette — the second-floor Italian restaurant is helmed by Salvatore Cuomo, one of Japan’s (and now China’s) celebrity Italian chefs. And the location, just off the Nanjing Road, places you in close proximity to any number more, as well as most of Shanghai’s best shopping.
