The sequel to the Philippe Starck-designed JIA Hong Kong is a new direction for a successful franchise. JIA Shanghai is more a luxury-residence concept, at least in the design, courtesy of the Australian firm Hecker Phelan & Guthrie — it’s a fully serviced boutique hotel, just like its sister in Hong Kong, but with perhaps a bit more of a discreet apartment-house atmosphere.
It’s located in a well-preserved Twenties apartment building, a subdued exterior for a contemporary-design boutique. And inside it edges closer to design-magazine luxe, with bold graphic color schemes, an impressive collection of modern furnishings, and bathrooms decked out in marble and Bisazza mosaic tile. Rooms and suites are bright and sunny, especially those with balconies, and all come with entertainment centers, and free wireless internet, as well as a smattering of local color in the form of Chinese antiques.
You’re by no means obligated to fend for yourself in that kitchenette — the second-floor Italian restaurant is helmed by Salvatore Cuomo, one of Japan’s (and now China’s) celebrity Italian chefs. And the location, just off the Nanjing Road, places you in close proximity to any number more, as well as most of Shanghai’s best shopping.

Location is very good. Very central and at a very characterful square just off Nanjing Road. Interesting ambience and many of my Shanghai friends did not know it was there ! Easy place to meet and catch up with people and the Jia team is very relaxed, courteous and friendly. The Italian restaurant Issimo is outstanding !I Disliked
Room was on the small side, with little natural light and no view, but was quiet cool and business friendly. It was not ready when I checked in, but was by the designated 2pm check-in time.

Room was super comfortable. Bathroom was very well designed. Centrally located, easy to get anywhere you wanted to be. Nice extra touches like free drinks in the lobby and wine service in the evening. Very friendly staff.I Disliked

The multi-lingual staff were professional but not scary poker-faces as is the case at many five-star hotels, and were fabulous and instinctive in suggesting restaurants and shopping trips (although they did seem to believe most western visitors would prefer to stick with westernized locations.) We had a corner balcony suite, which was huge for a hotel room, spotless, soundproof and had a style which was quirky and had personality without being pretentious. The black-out blinds kept the room dark in the morning, which is prized in a hotel room, and the bed and pillows were pristine and super-comfortable. The location was perfect, right near an underground train station and just off the great shopping strips of East and West Nanjing Rd. The complimentary afternoon cakes and pour-it-yourself wine in the evening in the guest lounge in the lobby were generous and welcome after a day in the noise of Shanghai, and we looked forward every day to breakfast (part of our accommodation package) in the second floor bar: smorgasbord of pastries, cakes, fruit, cereals and yoghurt, plus choice of two hot meals including asparagus wrapped in bacon with eggs. There's a guest laundry where you can wash and dry clothes instead of sending them off for expensive laundering. All up, the JIA was a fantastic choice.I Disliked
It sounds stupid, but the door to our suite seemed hard to open: you had to use your electronic pass key, then almost fall onto the door several times until it clicked open. The corridors had a sort of musty, walking underwater atmosphere and the gym—while having modern equipment—smelled like an open sewer in Shanghai circa 1920.

hip & modern design, small & cozy, friendly service, free breakfast in hip stylish atmosphere, all-you-can-drink water, soda, tea, coffee, cookies at the lobby, microwave and kitchen utensils in the room, spa-quality shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom, free wi-fi internet, best location (a lot better than jia hongkong)... just cross the road and there are luxurious shopping malls, chinese candies sold by the weight, yummy portuguese egg tarts, 4-storey nike store. if you ever get hungry, just walk out to the next building (next to an outdoor coffee place that sells cheap bread) and take the escalator to the second floor, turn left and you'll see nanxiang restaurant (same as the extremely popular one in yuyuan bazaar...more expensive but without the 1-hour queue...order steamed pork dumpling or "xiaolongbao") or turn right and you'll see yang's fried dumpling (very delicious and cheap: 4 big dumplings for 4.50 yuan...the best we ever had in shanghai)...they don't speak any english, so just point to order (yang's fried dumpling), pay at cashier and at the pickup window point at the takeaway foam box (don't ask for a bag, it's extra 0.50 yuan - many small shanghai shops will charge extra for bags)...now carry the box with care and bring it up to eat in your room (jia has plates, chopsticks, glasses, forks and spoons ready for you!)...eating tips: take one tiny bite to make a hole and slowly suck the soup inside first then enjoy the rest, it's steamy hot so be extra careful. for nice dinners, walk out to ritz carlton hotel and eat at "element fresh" in front of the hotel, order the salads: the best (we love beef salad), the wrap, and the warm italian...so delicious...be warned: the portion is california-huge (don't waste your money on their pastas, terrible), make sure you order something to drink (not water; dirty tap water and dirty glass).I Disliked
like jia hongkong, the hotel name on the building is only about 2 inches high... make sure you take a good look at the picture of the hotel building and remember it. our taxi from longyang maglev station didn't drop us off right in front of the hotel because the driver was too lazy to turn into the lane (even though we gave him the hotel address in chinese from jia's website that tells where the entrance is). luckily we recognized the hotel from the picture. P.S. when in shanghai, be extra careful when crossing the road or you'll get hit by cars that never stop at walk-sign crossings.1 user(s) found this review helpful
