JIA Shanghai
931 West Nanjing Road (entrance on Taixing Road)
Shanghai, China
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Happening
55 Rooms
The sequel to the Philippe Starck-designed JIA Hong Kong is a new direction for a successful franchise. JIA Shanghai is more a luxury-residence concept, at least in the design, courtesy of the Australian firm Hecker Phelan & Guthrie — it’s a fully serviced boutique hotel, just like its sister in Hong Kong, but with perhaps a bit more of a discreet apartment-house atmosphere.
It’s located in a well-preserved Twenties apartment building, a subdued exterior for a contemporary-design boutique. And inside it edges closer to design-magazine luxe, with bold graphic color schemes, an impressive collection of modern furnishings, and bathrooms decked out in marble and Bisazza mosaic tile. Rooms and suites are bright and sunny, especially those with balconies, and all come with entertainment centers, and free wireless internet, as well as a smattering of local color in the form of Chinese antiques.
You’re by no means obligated to fend for yourself in that kitchenette — the second-floor Italian restaurant is helmed by Salvatore Cuomo, one of Japan’s (and now China’s) celebrity Italian chefs. And the location, just off the Nanjing Road, places you in close proximity to any number more, as well as most of Shanghai’s best shopping.

Very stylish hotel without any attitude. Staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast menu is terrific and the service is great. Lovely bathroom with good amenities
What the hotel could do better
Provide some visual cues for the location of the entrance such as a lighted sign or the hotel name on the awning or perhaps a carpet at the doors. A good map on the website might help also.
After the initial struggle to find the hotel, I had a wonderful stay!

Location, relaxed easy going stylish place
What the hotel could do better
The breakfast service is too "particular" and slow. Too much attention on the special brewing of the coffe - takes 15 minutes to get a cup.

Amazing style! Top notch! This hotel sents the bar for other boutique hotels.
What the hotel could do better
It is slightly tricky to find and not very well marked... but that adds to the allure.

Location is very good. Very central and at a very characterful square just off Nanjing Road. Interesting ambience and many of my Shanghai friends did not know it was there !
Easy place to meet and catch up with people and the Jia team is very relaxed, courteous and friendly.
The Italian restaurant Issimo is outstanding !
What the hotel could do better
Room was on the small side, with little natural light and no view, but was quiet cool and business friendly. It was not ready when I checked in, but was by the designated 2pm check-in time.
