10 night minimum stay over Christmas and New Years.

Decades ago Jamaica was a high-class affair, with pronounced British overtones; Noël Coward and Ian Fleming lived here, and Winston Churchill and TS Eliot were known to visit. Parts of Jamaica have since moved on, and taken on a bit of a goofy California-style approach to anything-goes relaxation, all barefoot and casual — which makes Jamaica Inn all that much more anachronistic.

It may as well still be the Fifties here, and that's a good thing; this is a traditional and slightly retro resort, more elegant than the Jamaican stereotype. Guest rooms are smart and well-groomed, but never stuffy or old-fashioned, and a look at the guestbook will confirm that while the resort may be caught in a bit of a time warp, the clientele isn't — current celebrity guests are a bit younger than Churchill, though just as British.

This throwback atmosphere may be down to the fact that it's a family operation — the current owners live at the hotel, like their parents before them, and run the hotel with the kind of love that is sorely lacking in Jamaica's bigger, louder resorts. Some guests may miss some modern touches—there are no minibars, which may disappoint solitary drunks, and sports fanatics may be a bit bored by the comparative lack of watersports—but then there's nothing particularly classy about jet-skis, or drinking alone. There are seemingly hundreds of places in Jamaica to get a healthy dose of 21st-century mega-hospitality — one comes to Jamaica Inn for a taste of the island's more respectable past.
