If there’s anything Paris needs more of, it’s hip, contemporary design hotels that won’t break the budget — this is a town where high design generally means high gloss, which in turn means high prices. But by just about any measure Jules et Jim, a 23-room boutique in the Marais a couple of streets over from the Centre Pompidou, would have to be judged to fit the bill.
Maybe it couldn’t have happened any sooner. Today’s tastes run less to immaculate minimalism and more towards the funky bohemian-modern look which Jules and Jim wears so well. They’re simple, in black, white and wood, and while there’s little danger they’ll be mistaken for luxury suites, they’re quite comfortable, equipped with iPod docks and pared-down modern furnishings.
Most of the rooms are in the main building, but for variety’s sake a few occupy a pair of attached houses in the courtyard at the rear, including a split-level suite that edges closer to luxury territory. Meanwhile a pair of small rooms nestle under the eaves on the main building’s eighth floor, trading a bit of floor space for some extraordinary views of the city’s rooftops. And downstairs is a cozy bar that pulls triple duty as a library and a music venue, and which opens into the courtyard, a particular delight on a summer evening. More like this, please.
