A fine hotel can occasionally elevate an average destination, but the best hotel experiences are had in locations that are capable of elevating a fine hotel. Luang Prabang, with its stunning natural setting and its rich cultural history, is a city so extraordinary it hardly needs boutique hotels — which means guests at Kiridara, a striking modern-design boutique resort on a hillside overlooking the town, are in for an unforgettable time.

The building’s terraced construction means extra privacy and extra views for its twenty-four rooms, and the clean-lined minimalist look, with floors and furnishings of polished teakwood, attract interiors junkies from the world over. The infinity pool and the full-service spa provide ample opportunity for relaxation, and the out-of-town locale means Kiridara is pleasantly quiet, day and night.

You could easily shut yourself in for days at a time, but it’d be a shame, as you didn’t come all this way just for a hotel, even a very fine one. It’s a short shuttle ride (and a very manageable walk) to town, and Luang Prabang, with its ancient temples, is begging to be explored. And when you return you’ll look forward to dinner on the Deck, with the mountains as a backdrop, or in the chic, hushed environs of the Phu Doi restaurant.
