“No two rooms are the same” — any hotel with even a modicum of personality is likely to include such a phrase somewhere in its promotional literature, and it is bound to be true, at least to some degree, of any hotel selected by Tablet (though there may be a Japanese capsule hotel in our future). Then again, no two snowflakes are the same either, and that's not exactly a compelling argument for sleeping in the snow, is it?

That said, in L'Hôtel's case, it really is true. The rooms really are all different, vastly different, so different they seem to belong to separate hotels or even continents. The Barroco is in Italian Baroque style, the Pagode in an antique Japanese theme, the Léopard is finished in leopard-print fabrics, and the Oscar Wilde is in a traditional English style, a partial reconstruction of Wilde's dining room in London, featuring framed letters from the staff urging him to settle his hotel bill (which he did not live to do). All of this is carried off with a charm and a mastery that elevates it above gimmickry, into the category of real character, of personality.

Personality, after all, is what makes a hotel a Tablet hotel — not 24-hour room service, or indoor pools, or other standard five-star amenities. What cookie-cutter chain hotel can match L'Hôtel's central spiral staircase, into which sunlight pours through a domed glass ceiling, or the Roman-style bath, housed in the vault beneath the hotel?

There is a restaurant, and a good one — not a three-star spectacle of a restaurant, but an excellent one anyway. Le Restaurant exists not as a public relations scheme, or as a way for the hotel to maximize food and beverage profits, but as a service to its patrons — remarkable food, French but totally modern and light. This restaurant is as popular with the locals as the bar is with celebrities.

Fitting, as the hotel is not designed as a self-contained experience, but as a complement to the attractions of the surrounding district. L'Hôtel is located in St. Germain-des-Prés, the heart of the Rive Gauche, within easy reach of the Ecole des Beaux Arts and innumerable art galleries, cafés, and boutiques. It would be quite reasonable to claim that this is the best location in Paris for a hotel; for those interested in experiencing the authentic Paris, there is no better place to start.

In fact, if this were a boring corporate mega-hotel, the neighborhood alone would make it worth visiting. But this is a phenomenal hotel, full of life and character, and the combination of location and execution make L'Hôtel the place to stay in Paris, and, quite possibly, the perfect Tablet hotel.

PERFECT RESTING SPOT AND PLACE TO STAY IN PARIS

By JCJCBBK based in West Chester

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

Everything - the room we stayed in was as beautiful as it was displayed in the photos. The location was perfect - the Louvre and Notre Dame were both short walking distances away. The staff was very friendly, kindly spoke English, and went out of their way to make our stay so memorable that we are looking forward to coming back.

I Disliked

Nothing

The rooms were of a, little heavy, but very romantic deco. I loved the bathroom and the lobby was great.

Maybe a valet parking facility would be good

Flawlessly shabby-chic

By skrieger1334271 based in Hoboken

Stayed May 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

I've stayed in many hotels in Paris. This is the first hotel I can say could not be anywhere else in the world. It is quintessentially Paris. Steeped in history, charm, and more than a bit of gothic romance - this hotel has more character than any ten other hotels you can find combined. The service is spectacular. There were things about the room that would have bothered me in other hotels (such as very dim lighting throughout the room and bath, no full-length mirror) but I was so charmed by this hotel, I didn't care. They have shabby-chic so well down that they even know where to let the upholstery fray. The ability (open to all hotel guests) to privately reserve the roman bath (in a cave-like setting, lit with candles) and steam is a lovely touch.

I Disliked

The steam room could use a bit of attention - but nothing drastic. The setting of the roman bath area makes up for it. My only real complaint is that this hotel was too romantic to have been there by myself and only for one night. I look forward to returning for a truly romantic visit!

L'otel

Location Location Location! Also the included continental breakfast was perfect.

I Disliked

The rooms are packed with furniture, some of it unnecessary, using up what little space there is. The room is a bit banged and battered and could easily use with some 'freshening up.'

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
