There’s seemingly no end of historic structures in Italy, and because the supply is limitless, the Italians aren’t shy about putting them to contemporary use. La Badia di Orvieto, a 12th-century abbey (on a 6th-century building site) is now a luxurious small hotel, watchtower and all, with far-ranging panoramic views of the Umbrian countryside and an idyllic hillside setting to match its rich, atmospheric, meticulously restored spaces.
To say the rooms are decorated in period style might be a stretch, but they’re certainly classic, with a monastic aspect that’s very much in tune with the modern taste for simplicity in interiors. The only modern impingements are found in the one place they matter most, and that’s the bathrooms, which are functionally very much up to date. Upgrade to a suite if the ascetic life’s definitely not for you — all five have plentiful living space, and some add jacuzzis or second bathrooms.
The restaurant spotlights the produce and meats of Umbria, as well as olives and game from La Badia’s estate, all served under the abbey’s old stone vaulted ceilings. Included on the estate’s grounds are a swimming pool and a tennis court, and needless to say, a setting this picturesque does brisk wedding trade as well, with a variety of common spaces and not an unphotogenic angle in the house.
