All the world’s a stage — particularly true when it comes to hotels. They too have set pieces, actors, and props, each designed to help produce a cumulative effect on the audience. Fashionable, pampered, relaxed — these are the hospitality equivalents of theatrical genres like comedies, musicals, or dramas. There’s pretense and posturing, of course, but when it works, it’s beautiful. And at La Maison Favart, things work very, very well.
The eponymous Favarts fell in love in 1745, when Monsieur spied Mademoiselle in the chorus. Today the hotel that bears their name is close to the Opéra-Comique, which M. F. helped transform, and the couple’s portraits adorn the lounge. All fussiness stops at their powdered white wigs, though, as the décor owes more to our century than the eighteenth. Color draws you in, rich textiles like taffeta and velvet keep you there, a fascinating one-two, visual-tactile punch. Paris can make even the savviest dresser feel dishabille, so take a cue from the rooms at La Maison and mix swirling florals with staid plaid, or burnt orange, mustard yellow, deep pink, and midnight. Sheer confidence often leads to applause, or at least incredulous admiration.
Down in the basement, the pool sometimes glows purple, the color of love. It’s meant more for relaxation, or maybe stimulation, than hardcore workouts. There’s a small gym too, with a few fitness machines. No restaurant, but with a boulangerie around every bend, a café on every corner, and an in-room fridge, shame on you if you forget your lines.

What I liked:
Comfortable rooms, pleasant breakfast room, convenient location.
What the hotel could do better:
We arrived on an early red-eye and of course hoped to check in early so we could get to a trade show. Though I recognize this isn't always possible, the front desk team was relatively impassive despite our emails and calls in advance on the subject, which was frustrating start to the trip.
