Passion doesn’t have to declare itself loudly. La Passion, an eight-room boutique hotel in a Spanish Colonial manor house in Cartagena, Colombia, is quiet, intimate, and about as elegant as it gets — and the adults-only policy certainly doesn’t hurt. At this size, it would hardly qualify as a hotel at all, were it not for a couple of remarkable big-hotel luxuries, most notably the rooftop swimming pool and the terrace cocktail bar.
Both of which tend to be mercifully uncrowded — La Passion holds a maximum of sixteen people, and given the inherently romantic nature of the place, they tend to spend a fair bit of time in the stunning guest rooms. Interiors are simple, but far from minimal — some original 18th-century flooring, some classic antique furnishings, and the occasional modern element, like printed wallpaper or bright contemporary colors. Balconies provide a venue for private al fresco lounging, and the ambience of the historic city center of Cartagena makes for an inspiring backdrop. The down side, if there is one, is that La Passion isn’t completely self-contained, lacking such facilities as a restaurant — but then a guest house of this modest size wouldn’t be expected to have one anyway, and you wouldn’t want them to add anything that might spoil the mood…

What I liked:
Unique, charming, romantic, exclusive, tasteful, private, discreet, artistic. One just feels an immediate sense of warmth and well being. The rooftop pool is a gem. Beautiful plants adorn. high ceilings, beautiful courtyard, lovely sitting areas and wonderful friendly and caring staff who have a magical way of making one feel so perfect.
It is a hotel I would recommend for romantic couples who understand a unique sense of exclusivity in a beautiful old colonial house with only eight rooms and who are looking for intimacy and privacy in a luxurious tranquil and tasteful environment. It is not for those expecting to find the commodities of a large five star hotel ie spa (although they will arrange in room massages), restaurants, work centers, fitness centers etc.
It is a very unique place.

What I liked:
Gorgeous rooms in the way they were styled. Staff was very pleasant with great recs.
What the hotel could do better:
Mosquitoes maybe drawn to the many plants? We would have loved to use common areas more if there weren't as many mosquitoes.

What I liked:
We loved the setting, location, and how secluded it was for the first couple of days/nights of our trip. We literally had our own private pool for half of the trip!
What the hotel could do better:
I wish that the service had been a little more hands-on. A turn-down service would have been nice and some other modern amenities like hair dryers and irons in the room, an extra blanket, etc. Although I like not being bothered, they should check on guests a couple of times a day at the pool. Also, we had a really bad experience with the recommended tour to a local island. We said we wanted to go to la Playa Blanca, and they booked us on an experience tour to Isla Rosario that was terrible - it was the low light of our trip. They need to be sure that they are recommending good things for guests. Overall, they need to be more attentive and walk you through the room and hotel upon arrival. Finally, they should not charge such a high service fee per day - that was an unexpected charge that really added up on top of an experience rate.
