There are design hotels and then there are design hotels; this one is a National Historic Monument, so designated because it’s a master work, built in 1947, by the architect, landscape designer and furniture maker Antonio Bonet. If Bonet isn’t quite a household name, his style will nonetheless be recognizable — and likely admired — by anyone who has seen one of his familiar chairs, whose designs have continued to proliferate (in originals, and imitations) decades after their inception.

Of course the original Bonet furniture that fills the rooms, lovely as it is, is probably the least among many very appealing reasons for considering La Solana. There’s also the fact that it’s set right on Solanas Beach, just a few quiet miles up the coast from the high-flying party town of Punta del Este. The hotel’s six rooms, all quite large, have walls of glass facing the beach and the ocean beyond. If you want to step into the coastal scene, just slide the glass doors and walk across your private terrace, and you’re there.

On a stretch of coast that’s quickly approaching the status of a bona fide riviera, La Solana is about the farthest thing from a mega-resort. The ocean itself serves as the pool, and the restaurant, another beautifully designed glassed-in space, is as much about the peaceful setting on the beach as it is about the simple (if delectable) fare.

In fact La Solana exudes a subtle, unusually tasteful beachiness throughout. Arriving in your room, you’ll find a canvas bag full of beach towels, and upon eagerly accommodated request, the restaurant will pack you a wicker picnic basket to carry down to the water. The kicker, perhaps, is the massage program; treatments take place on the sand, billowing muslin curtains set up around a massage table — though if you opt to take your massage in the room, you’re hardly much farther from the water.

Please note: La Solana Boutique Hotel operates seasonally. The hotel is open from mid-December to mid-March.

How to get there: La Solana Boutique Hotel is conveniently located 10 minutes (by car) from the Punta del Este International Airport and 1 hour (by car) from Carrasco International Airport. Please contact CustomerService@TabletHotels.com for assistance with airport transfers.
