A chip off the La Maison block, La Suite shares an owner, and a concept — a tiny and impossibly stylish luxury guest house, far enough off the main tourist drag to escape the crowds, but close enough to feel like you’re in on the action. In La Suite’s case, this means Joatinga, one of Rio’s most exclusive residential districts, at the end of a gated street, with some of the best ocean views in the city and access to a well-kept secret: Joatinga Beach.

Seven rooms is about as intimate as it gets, and as rooms, they’re remarkable — well-designed, individual, luxe but not ostentatious, and best of all, all seven take advantage of the phenomenal view, from full-length windows or private balconies. One pool would be enough for a hotel this size, but La Suite has two, not to mention Joatinga Beach, a surfer’s paradise, a couple of minutes’ drive down a cliffside road.

There’s no restaurant per se, and nothing but houses within walking distance, but the hotel’s kitchen is run by a highly accomplished chef — eat on the terrace taking in the view of the beach and the Atlantic, or in the swanky modernist dining room. Getting out means a taxi ride, as Ipanema is a good fifteen minutes away; La Suite’s bar, though, is tempting, open more or less all the time, and it’s a short stumble home.

How to get there:

La Suite is approximately a 30 minute drive from Rio de Janeiro/Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport.

The building and how it was designed and furnished were tres chic!! Francois and Rodrigo could not have been more hospitable and charming.

What the hotel could do better

Only one item was a bit tacky. The instructions were clear that they accept only cash or travelers checks. What is not said is if you do pay with travelers checks they add a 10% service charge which should have been clearly stated.

    Where to start...

From the outset Francois & Rodrigo were perfect hosts....

I was travelling solo for much of my Brazil trip, hooking up with friends along the way. They made my stay as easy as possible hooking me up with everything from a guided tour of the city to a tandem paraglide jump to a private beach for the day...

For me the whole experience was great...

It had the perfect mix of relaxation and excitement and I made some very good friends along the way...

The loacation is spectacular being in Rio's millionaires row and is only a short cab journey away from the centre....

I have recommended the place already....

What the hotel could do better

    Bizarrely nothing really....

It would have been nice to have been able to have a nightcap when we returned from a night out on the terrace but it's no big deal....

Everything! Be welcomed by François-Xavier & Rodrigo, our room with fantastic views, the food, all the details & attentions in the stunning decoration.

As it was for our honeymoon we had a bottle of Champagne and fresh fruits to welcome us with a very nice note from the owners.

The amazing breakfast was served on our private terrass and we felt like movie stars... It wasn't our first time in Rio, as we're in love with the city, but we couldn't imagine such views and such a special location in Rio, only 15 mins from Ipanema. La Suite is realy a gem where we've been treated as we never been in any hotels we stayed.

What the hotel could do better

Absolutely nothing! We would recommend La Suite to anyone and already did it. It's just a very special & fantastic place!

Rooms are impeccably decorated and the breakfasts which are included in the room tariff are beautiful. Expect to be served the freshest and most tropical of fruits you know of.

What the hotel could do better

Location. Everything in Rio as a city centres on and around the beach. La Suite is 20 minutes away from the action of Ipanema & Copacabana beaches therefore putting you at a disadvantage. Unless you have a hire car, your only mode of transport is a taxi and beware that at night the fares double. La Suite is fantastic for when the weather is warm and you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city in your own space. There is a small private beach within walking distance of the hotel called Joatinga. But if like me you encounter bad weather and cannot go to the beach, there is not a lot to do at all and La Suite as a small boutique hotel is not well equipped for these circumstances. Additionally, rooms do not include televisions and the service staff don't speak great English.

Avoid ordering dinners in the hotel unless you are travelling on an unlimited budget. They are currently charging 150 reals for dinner which is out of control for a small salad(tasty), a small whole fried fish (overcooked) with a side of mushrooms followed by a globe of icecream.

Also, no credit card facilities and owner is insistent on payment before you arrive by TT to his overseas bank account. And there is a no refund policy.

And people with allergies to animals beware. The owners have at leats 4 dogs that roam the property.

Owners were incredibly helpful and friendly, even though the hotel feels very exclusive we were made to feel very much at home - more a house guest than a hotel guest!

What the hotel could do better

The location is a little way out of Rio, but the owners supply you with a useful card to give to taxi drivers withdirections back home. Cab is only 15 mins from Leblon / Ipenema and relatively cheap. Also if you were more central you would sacrafice the amazing view - which is worth the inconvenience of a short cab ride to city centre.

The place has been very tastefully designed and offers a unique view of the city.

What the hotel could do better

Transport to and from the hotel into town was quite difficult and tedious. There are no services within walking distance.

High prices for any snacks and water at the hotel feel unfair especially as their rates are exceptionally high by local standards.

The service was quite poor and the owner was a little too relaxed!

The term 'suite' is misleading as our 'black suite' was actually just a room

Their description of the beach is more favourable than the reality

Contrary to their claims, there was only one pool, not two, and it is very small

Payment must be in cash and in euros.
