Anouska Hempel is perhaps best known to Tablet’s audience as the proprietor of the eccentric, maximalist, Eastern-leaning Blakes, in Kensington. In the larger scheme of things, she’s got a pronounced rebellious streak — having gone from Bond girl to boutique hotelier, she’s not exactly followed the crowd. And now that the hoteliers of the world are falling over themselves chasing after the very same eclectic, well-traveled cool that is Blakes’ signature, Ms Hempel has with the advent of La Suite West, returned to the stark yet stylish monochrome minimalism that made such a sensation of The Hempel, her original (now sadly departed) boutique hotel.
To say that black and white dominate here as well would be something of an understatement. Fortunately the creature comforts are such that there’s little chance you’ll find it cold — little gestures like Frette linens and robes and Molton Brown bath products go a long way. There’s more than a touch of Zen about the place, and the contrast between the Victorian exterior and the Hempelian interior could scarcely be greater. Hard to believe this is Bayswater, with Hyde Park a short walk in one direction and Paddington Station not much farther in the other — which means, incidentally, that the Heathrow Express provides what is very nearly door-to-door service.

What I liked:
Location in Notting Hill/Paddington District, Bathroom decor/radiant heat floors, Hotel Style
What the hotel could do better:
I did have a wonderful stay... of note, the bedroom suite I was in (room 216) shared a wall with the elevator, and the four post bed was tightly squeezed into its room.
The wall mounted tv would not extend into the room wand was obscured by one of the bed posts.
Navigating around the bed posts was tight - good thing I'm not overweight.

What the hotel could do better:
Too much noise in the rooms due to street noise and no double glazing. Rooms too small. No king size beds in any rooms. Bad housekeeping service, replaced hair conditioner with lotion because it was same white color!. The whole hotel is too dark, one can't see where one is going. Elevators didn't work on occasion. Heated floor in bathrooms burned your feet.
