Perched on a cliffside in La Jolla, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, La Valencia has been the grand dame of the San Diego area since 1926, its pink stucco walls and mediterranean-style terraces playing host to Hollywood's biggest stars from the silent era to the present. There are more modern hotels in La Jolla, but there are no others with the history an elegance of La Valencia.
Besides the striking Spanish villa look of the place, La Valencia is notable for its exclusive feel — the location, though easily accessible from San Diego, feels secluded, like a private resort. The hotel is known for its high standard of service, balancing attention and privacy — the new Ocean Villas offer full butler service, a rarity in laid-back Southern California.
The rooms and suites in the main hotel building are a bit old-fashioned, but stylish, all with opening windows to let in the sea breeze, overlooking the village, the gardens, or the ocean. The brand-new Ocean Villas are more modern in style, and have high beamed ceilings, marble bathrooms, and jacuzzi tubs. Some have fireplaces; all have king beds and wet bars.
On the 10th floor of the hotel is the Sky Room, a tiny restaurant (12 tables) with a 180-degree view of the picturesque La Jolla Cove. Downstairs is the Whaling Bar and Grill, which attracts the locals with its private-club feel. Of course the restaurants and cafes of La Jolla lie just outside the hotel, as well as a number of museums and galleries, and the Prospect Street shopping district, San Diego's answer to Rodeo Drive. If you feel like communing with the tourists, there's always Sea World — but most of La Valencia's guests will keep to the village of La Jolla, if not to the hotel's grounds.

What I liked:
Outstanding service.
What the hotel could do better:
We were there while they were completing renovations so a little noisy during the day but the outstanding service made up for the inconvenience.

What I liked:
The pool area was lovely as was the poolside food and beverage service.
What the hotel could do better:
The customer service was terrible. We arrived 2 hours before check in time and were told that our room would be ready early, in about 20min. We never got into our room until 4.5 hours later. Horrible. They kept giving us the run-around saying their housekeeping was delayed. We also repeatedly asked for an additional hairdryer in the room and it was never delivered to us during the 2 nights we were there. I would not stay in this overpriced, poorly serviced hotel.
