For quite a lot of travelers the conversation about the Caribbean begins and ends at the beach. But for anyone who’s willing to take a broader view, the region offers charms that have little to do with surf and sand. Among them is St. Lucia, whose verdant Pitons rise sharply from sea level, making for some of the Caribbean’s most extraordinary views — views which are available in the strongest possible dose from an open-air lodging like Ladera Resort, clinging as it does to a hillside above Pitons Bay, just around the mountain from Soufrière.

The usual complement of island activities is offered, most of them (including the beaches) a short shuttle ride away, but most of the action at Ladera takes place within its three-walled villas and suites. You’ll have a plunge pool, possibly with a waterfall, as well as access to spa treatments in one of the hotel’s four treatment rooms, but in the end what you’ll remember is unquestionably the impossible view from the bedroom of the forested slopes and the sea beyond. They’ve added portable DVD players and wireless internet, for the benefit of those guests who can’t bear to disconnect, but trust us — the amenities that matter here are most decidedly the low-tech ones.
