It’s not just the design, by the Parisian architect Jean-Philippe Nuel, that’s turning heads — this stylish little boutique is garnering notices for its budget-friendly price tag as well. After all, it’s not every day that a new contemporary design hotel sets up shop on these staid old streets, and when one does, it’s most often priced high enough that you’d be better off hiring the architect to do up one of your rooms at home, and just staying there.

Le Général is a three-star hotel, whatever that means anymore — surely if you can’t find something to have for dinner in Paris, you don’t really deserve to eat. Anyway it’s not over-the-top luxurious, just smart, full of modern touches like counter-top basins and Philippe Starck furniture against a sedate background of neutrals and rich woods, all set off with splashes of color — floral arrangements, the odd pink wall, and details like rubber ducks in your bathroom and green apples on your pillows. At these rates satellite television and wireless internet are expected; the fitness center and the sauna are a bit above and beyond. The breakfast room, with that floral-print wallpaper, turns into a cocktail bar in the evening, and serves a hot chocolate of near-legendary status.

October08 Review- Le General

By jestow based in Brookline

Stayed October 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The room was quite pleasant and tasteful, especially the bathroom. Although, the neighborhood is not exactly posh, the proximity to the charming street scenes of Le Marais was outstanding. The reception area was very comfortable and hip as well. The room was tiny, but we had been forewarned and it wasn't an issue.

I Disliked

We were there for 4 nights and at no time was there more than a single person available to address clients at the front desk. All of the staff members were uniformly friendly and helpful, but I found myself feeling badly for them when they had multiple parties vying for their attention. Again, they all handled the workload professionally but it seemed unfair to the staff and the patronage to be so understaffed.

eorpin

Good value but a bit worn around the edges...

By eorpin based in Central

Stayed July 2008

Overall rating: Fair

I Liked

Good value for Paris (which isn't saying a lot!). Interesting location - a bit out of the main drag but close to several Metro stops and still a reasonable walking distance to the main touristy things. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby.

I Disliked

We had both a double room and a room for 2 adults and 2 kids (a 'suite') - whilst the double room was a fabulous size with a street view, great bathroom and little balcony, the 'suite' was only just capable of fitting the four of us in. The modern decor with a punch of pink at a reasonable price was one of the biggest attractions, but disappointingly the maintenance is a bit wanting - so expect paint chips, scratchs and just generally things looking a little tired.

Great for a short stay

By cbringuez based in New York

Stayed July 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The staff was friendly and helpful. The lounge/bar area was pleasant and fun. Very easy access to metro, just a 5 minute walk away. There were also many cafes, and shops in the area-- everything you could need was within walking distance. The room was clean and stylishly minimal, the bathroom was very modern with great water pressure.

I Disliked

The bed could have been more comfortable, it was extremely basic. It was fine for me, but for someone that has a bad back-- good luck.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
