Though it’s the address — 6 rue Saint-Placide — rather than the adjective which lends this Saint-Germain hotel its name, there is a certain calmness about Hôtel Le Placide’s cool white contemporary interiors. The final effect, however, is anything but tranquilizing: it’s hard not to feel energized by the prospect of an eleven-room boutique which somehow manages to combine inventive visual style, generously apportioned space and a highly desirable Left Bank location.
Nine of those rooms are junior suites, incidentally, each one individually designed, and the most is made of the natural light, sunshine spilling in through the windows and illuminating the interiors’ white backgrounds. This being Paris and all, they’re still more cozy than cavernous, but it’s a nice surprise to be able to take “cozy” literally rather than euphemistically.
Anyway in Saint-Germain a good deal of your day will be spent outside of your chambers — anything else would be a bit perverse. As usual there’s no restaurant, just a twenty-four-hour menu of quick bites, but as usual (around here) that’s hardly a drawback, since the café culture is key to the location’s appeal. That and the legendary shopping at the nearby Bon Marché.

What I liked:
The location
What the hotel could do better:
The service was poor. For instance, on one day we came back to the hotel having been out for the day at approx 4pm. The cleaner had not cleaned our room but had left her trolley and equipment in it. She was nowhere to be seen though. We had to wait downstairs for half an hour for the hotel to find her and for her to finish cleaning it. We had a turn down service on the last of 3 nights, but not the first 2. Breakfast was not included, which is surprising given that the room proce was approx £300 per night. There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the bedroom, and they were available downstairs only at a cost of 5 euros per cup. The glass door across the shower was too small so the bathroom flooded whenever we had a shower.
