Le Relais Bernard Loiseau - ex Hotel de la Cote d'Or
Bernard loiseau
Seaulieu, Burgundy, France
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Secluded
33 Rooms
Chef Bernard Loiseau himself is no longer with us, but his kitchen carries on, in the restaurant and hotel that now bears his name. And just because it’s known as a restaurant first doesn’t mean there’s anything second-class about the hospitality — this is something more than just the typical couple of rooms stuck upstairs as an afterthought.
Take the spa, for example — it’s not every country inn that features a Roman-style spa, complete with sauna, mud bath and fitness center. There’s an outdoor pool as well, in the midst of what the French call an English garden, which is itself the perfect venue for an aperitif or just a spell of good old-fashioned lounging.
There are not one or two but 33 rooms, each one individually designed and decorated, from the humble standard rooms to the luxurious junior suites, and many come with balconies or terraces with views over the central garden.
Public spaces include a library and a billiards room named after Charles X. And then of course there’s the dining room, where Patrick Bertron pays tribute to Bernard Loiseau’s cuisine. And it wouldn’t be Burgundy without a cellar full of first-rate bottles — here you’ll find the best the region has to offer.

I Liked
The warm & cosy living room &
the welcome bottle of champagne
& the great food
What the hotel could do better
Staff, the reception is arrogant and unwilling, and the restaurant staff doesn't know how to smile

I Liked
I went in December which perhaps wasn't the best season to visit this region but truly enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I had a spacious room with a fireplace, and it was very comfortable. The restaurant was fantastic, with great wines as you would expect from this region. Would recommend to those who enjoy good, creative french cuisine and wine from this region - but be prepared to pay for the quality.
What the hotel could do better
Nothing.

I Liked
We very much enjoyed this hotel, which is on par with the first-rate chains like the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons in terms of quality of facilities and service.
What the hotel could do better
The town wasn't a quaint as I would have liked, and the wine tasting opportunities were not as available as I had assumed. The beds are a little dated (although certainly very passable), and don't measure up to the first-rate US chains.

We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
