We go on and on about the need to expand one’s mental picture of Brazil to include more than just Rio and São Paulo. Well, in this case, it doesn’t need to be expanded by much. Barra de Guaratiba is maybe twenty miles outside of Rio proper, on the Atlantic coast to the southwest of town. But that’s far enough. Here, on a hillside overlooking the water, the city is the last thing on your mind, the stresses of urban life replaced by sun, sand, and a generous helping of pared-down post-modern Brazilian interior design. It’s minimalist in places, sure, but the occasional rustic touch, as well as a light hand with the French armchairs and sofas, means it’s always inviting, never cold.
The word relais isn’t just a grab at some sort of association with European glamour. It’s actually a pretty decent description for a cozy and intimate five-suite country outpost. Of course it’s more than a carriage house, the suites decked out in polished hardwoods, with jetted tubs or Jacuzzis. It’s only in the restaurant, Le Bateau, that Le Relais really flexes its French muscles, serving local fare and fresh Brazilian seafood with a distinctly Gallic influence.
