It doesn’t exactly top the travel editors’ lists of “hot beach destinations,” but you’ve no doubt been around enough to know that’s not necessarily a true reflection of the quality of a place. The Senegalese coast hasn’t got the critical mass, perhaps, that a mass tourism destination needs to have. But as long as there are hotels like Les Alizés Beach Resort, this little sliver of West Africa has plenty to recommend it.
The setting is picture-perfect, the villas set amid lush gardens on a hillside just above the beach, looking due west over the Atlantic — this last fact perhaps best appreciated at sunset. The comforts are plush if not opulent, and the style is attractively conservative; here it’s the extremely friendly and laid-back atmosphere that counts.
Les Alizés’s cuisine is French, as is the prevailing language, and the focus on living the good life is very French as well, whether it’s by the pool deck or at a restaurant table overlooking the beach. For orientation’s sake: you’re practically walking distance from the little Cap Skirring airport — okay, three miles — and just as far in the other direction, for what it’s worth, is the border with Guinea-Bissau.
