Though conveniently located right in the middle of downtown, surrounded by the shopping, business, and entertainment districts of Chung Hsiao and Dun Hua roads, Les Suites Taipei Da-an is a cozy and intimate boutique hotel, a worthy alternative to the city’s many enormous business hotels.

Rooms are handsome and contemporary, vaguely Art Deco, in a palette of muted earth tones with wood paneling and some wood floors. The furnishings and style walk a delicate line, far superior to the beige business-hotel norm, yet never verging on designer-showroom ostentatiousness. As for amenities, no corners are cut, with flat-screen televisions and heavy down comforters as standard, and above all, there’s no shortage of space; the doubles are remarkably expansive, and suites hide a generous bedroom behind a sliding partition.

Clubby and personal aren’t words commonly used to describe the atmosphere in Far East business hotels, which is why Les Suites is such a refreshing contrast. There are hotels in Taipei where you can expect a grander treatment and more frighteningly obsequious service, but there aren’t many places that combine this sort of low-key charm with such comfortable surroundings. And this laid-back feeling isn’t a result of some outer-suburbs location—any number of the glamorous restaurants and nightspots of the new Taipei are within easy reach, as is the World Trade Center and some of the best shopping in town.
