Little Palm Island

Little Torch Key, FL, USA
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Secluded
30 Rooms
Though the words "Florida Keys" might prompt mental images of crowded, touristy excess, fear not: Little Palm Island is a remote, secluded resort, accessible only by boat or seaplane. This is, one imagines, how the Keys were meant to be enjoyed; surrounded by five acres of tropical foliage, crystal blue waters, and mile after mile of peace and quiet.
How many other island resorts can claim Harry Truman and Franklin Delano Roosevelt as distinguished guests? And more to the point, can one imagine them partaking of the over-the-top Spring Break atmosphere offered by many of the less sober-minded Florida resorts? The image, frankly, is too disturbing to contemplate, and verges on the off-topic. Suffice to say this is that most rare of beasts: the Florida island resort fit for a classic statesman.
It would be easy, in fact, to imagine oneself transported in time, to an era before Truman, before either of the Roosevelts. At Little Palm Island there are no televisions, no telephones, no fax machines, though the presence of modem connections chips away a bit at the illusion. The thatched-roof bungalows are named for birds both tropical and otherwise, and nestle into groves of Jamaican coconut palms. Each bungalow holds two air-conditioned one-bedroom suites, with private decks overlooking the ocean, indoor whirlpool baths, and outdoor showers behind bamboo fences.
There are a variety of recreational activities on offer, ranging from complete idleness to deep-sea fishing expeditions. The less active might wish to lounge on the white sand beach, meditate in the Zen garden, or spend an afternoon at SpaTerre. For the more adventuresome, there are Eco-tours, sailing excursions, and diving instructors standing by. The area is a particularly fertile one for divers, boasting both the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary and the sunken wreck of the Adolphus Busch. Above-water sporting options abound as well, with the hotel's collection of canoes, kayaks, and SunKats available for exploring the coast.
This is the Florida Keys experience as it should be: private, discreet, and with the element of class so sorely lacking throughout much of the rest of Florida. Little Palm Island is more Warren Buffett than Jimmy Buffett, with a price tag to match. But at any price, it is remarkable that there is a corner of the Keys that still feels so remote and unspoiled.
How to get there:
From Miami International Airport, take 836 West to the Florida Turnpike South. Continue South on the Turnpike to its end. Drive South on scenic U.S. Highway 1 for approximately 120 miles to Little Torch Key and Mile Marker 28.5. After leaving Big Pine Key you will be on Little Torch Key. You will turn left on Pirates Road. (Look for the Little Palm Island bus shelter with the Little Palm Island logo). Turn left into the parking lot where you will see an off-white building with a thatch roof, that is Little Palm Island's Shore Station. Register here and wait for the next complimentary motor yacht shuttle to the Island. The motor yacht departs the Shore Station every hour on the bottom of the hour from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Please remember hotel check-in is not guaranteed until 3:00 p.m.
