It may still be the most charmingly low-key of Colorado’s major ski resort towns, but that doesn’t mean Telluride hasn’t gone upscale; it’s just that it’s done it in a charmingly low-key way. Lumière Telluride combines boutique-hotel good looks with distinctly residential comforts, and its position in the enclave of Mountain Village affords a measure of seclusion from the town, as well as ski-in/ski-out access to the famous slopes.

It’s a modern construction, and the room footprints are suitably large — even the queen and king rooms come with kitchenettes and luxe oversized bathrooms, and the suites, residences and penthouses very quickly verge on presidential-suite territory. At the high end you’ll have a working fireplace, a Wolf gas range, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and more lounge space than you’ll know what to do with.

And even when the Lumière is at its most hotel-like, it’s still possessed of a friendly, homey flavor. There’s an old-fashioned concierge desk and a stylish bar for an après-ski drink or a bite of sushi, but it’s all delivered with an unpretentious light touch. Relaxation, not ostentation, is the name of the game: the terrace’s hot and cold pools and the hotel’s massage and yoga offerings are simply a balm for sore muscles.
