The Lyall Hotel and Spa is a converted apartment building in South Yarra, a highly fashionable and cosmopolitan district outside of the city’s center. Melbourne is already one of the world's most comfortable and enticing cities, and the downtown area is easily accessible by train — with a station just minutes from the hotel’s front door. South Yarra, though, is Melbourne’s preferred district for upscale shopping, has a thriving restaurant and bar scene, and is a compelling destination in its own right. All of this in a peaceful residential setting - so much cosmopolitan excitement usually comes at the price of an agonizing night spent listening to car horns, or haggling with taxi drivers.

The residential neighborhood and apartment house flavor make the Lyall a uniquely comfortable experience. Each floor features a mini art gallery and a lounge complete with fireplace. Suites themselves, from studio plan to two bedroom, are Oriental in flavor, elegantly furnished and attractively designed, complete with kitchens and walk-in closets. The Platinum Suite's Bang & Olufsen entertainment system and outsized dining area may be enough to convince guests that this is indeed a private apartment, and Melbourne their new home.

In other ways, the residential atmosphere gives way to one more reminiscent of a resort hotel. To that end, the Lyall offers spa and fitness facilities, as well as one excellent restaurant — the Bistro Lyall — and a Champagne Bar, serving French champagne by the glass.

At the end of the day, Melbourne is a city much like any other (though perhaps a little bit better), and there are plenty of hotels, large and small. But there is absolutely no reason to settle for a typical hotel experience, and, frankly, no reason to book a room downtown when the Lyall is just nine minutes away by train. If business requires your attention in the city center, then by all means take care of it, but at the end of the day, retire to South Yarra, and experience Melbourne like a local.
