Bangkok’s boutique Maduzi calls itself a "conceptual hotel," but that doesn’t mean it's difficult. The concept is something like "luxury isolation," which is familiar enough. And the policy that guarantees absolute privacy is this: no walk-ins, and no visitors who don’t know the password. This is no joke, as the gate is closed twenty-four hours a day. Guests, of course, are allowed to come and go as they please — but after experiencing the meticulous Thai hospitality and dedicated personal service, they may choose splendid solitude over the busy hustle of the Sukhumvit district just outside the gates.
Inside, the décor is clubby and sophisticated; the spacious guest rooms promote a serene aesthetic, with blond wood floorboards, modernist furniture and hanging lamps alongside the king beds. State-of-the-art in-room entertainment — flat-screen TV, wi-fi — is standard, of course, along with the elements of a pared-down business center. Marble bathrooms are stocked with an impressive sampling of local scents and amenities.
Maduzi’s emphasis on intimacy and smaller-scale luxury doesn’t leave much room for one of those big resort spa centers, but the hotel does offer in-room treatments by appointment along with a small 24-hour fitness center. The restaurant, on the other hand, is very much a full-scale culinary experience, offering French-Asian fusion created by the Japanese head chef Yuya. Unlike the hotel itself, the restaurant welcomes interlopers, and has become quite popular among local foodies and discerning expats.
