Maison 140 is essentially the boutique hotel take on the good old bed and breakfast, LA style, in a 44-room building that once belonged to actress Lillian Gish. Like a true B & B, it’s set away from the urban hub in residential Beverly Hills. From the outside 140 is hard to spot — it's a gray, narrow building, striking only in its plainness.
Step in the lobby, though, and it’s a different story. Some people find it reminiscent of Blakes, in London, others of the Latin Quarter in Paris. In any case, 140 has an extreme case of wanna-be Europe — and in this town, that’s a welcome change. The lobby is black glass à la early Seventies, with suspended ceiling medallions — the lounge, a cozy space all black and come-hither crimson, mahogany wood, chinoiserie-painted mirrors. Some might say 140 is like a 1920s Parisian B&B, but it would be more accurate to say it looks like a high-class, turn-of-the-century bordello — which, of course, many Parisian B&Bs were. The lounge, especially, with its reflective walls, slipper sofas, and its seating capacity of five, is suited to, er, snuggly tête-à-têtes.
Upstairs, the hallways are completely black; thank God they’re narrow, or you would get completely lost. The rooms are also quite brothel-like. Designer Kelly Wearstler has picked a color scheme for every floor, each of them set to stun: scarlet, tangerine, lime. The bathrooms are patterned in white and black hexagonal tiles. There’s wallpaper on the ceiling. The dressers are covered with mirrors. Louis XVI chairs look naughty with tasseled throws.
Because of Maison 140’s size, there's not much of a scene downstairs — you might have to hop over the nearby Avalon to catch some buzz. But 140’s rooms are designed for use. What you decide to do with that velvet headboard in your room is nobody's business.
How to get there:
Maison 140 Beverly Hills is a 20-minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport, but the trip can take as long as an hour depending on traffic. Self-parking is available for $25 USD per night.

What I liked:
Great customer service and friendly staff
What the hotel could do better:
I asked for a cab to called as I was going to a fundraiser event and had not rented a car. the cab that arrived was so filthy with the inside door panels missing and a cab driver who did not know the address in Beverly Hills even though it was less than 2 miles from the Hotel.
I would hope that Maison 140 would screen their choice of cab companies so their patrons would not be embarrassed by the vehicle they are riding in.

What I liked:
Very well decorated. Great lobby and bar and fantastic location in Beverly Hills.
What the hotel could do better:
Some of the rooms are very very small and this does not come across in the hotel photos or literature. The size of the rooms were a disappointment.

What I liked:
Great design by Kelly Wearstler for an affordable price in a good area. They did a great job on creating a luxurious room and great bathroom in a small space. However, I wish they would change the air conditioning as it is the old box you'd see in a motel 6. While the design is great, this aspect leaves you feeling like you just paid $200/night for a motel with pretty paint. It's in stark contrast to the marble bath... just doesn't go together and is disappointing.
What the hotel could do better:
The hotel could have better customer service. We asked for an iron and toothpaste (separate requests) and each time had to call twice and it took over an hour to walk it down the hall. The bar area could be organized better. There is too much furniture in there! It would feel more inviting if there was some breathing room between seats. It would be great if breakfast was included. I think guests would really get a sense of the bed and breakfast Parisian feel you're trying to create.
