Margutta 54
Rome, Italy
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet
4 Rooms
Margutta 54’s bohemian street cred dates back to the 1850s, when the great-grandfather of the current owner established an artists’ colony. As the residents’ stature and influence grew — Picasso and Stravinksy lived and worked there, while Fellini moved in down the street — the shacks turned chic, and local galleries blossomed, laying the groundwork for the newest incarnation of Margutta 54: a private courtyard, sheltered from the street, opening onto four luxuriously appointed guest rooms.
Owner Alberto Moncada has gone to great lengths to ensure that Margutta 54 stays on the tasteful side of stylish — a welcome effort in a neighborhood so close to touristy spots like the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. The airy rooms bear traces of urban bohemia, with open floor plans and sturdy wooden furniture that evokes classic Italian cinema rather than garret-dwelling painters. There’s nothing self-consciously artsy about the aesthetic, just dark floorboards that complement the furniture, king-sized beds, and perfectly integrated modern conveniences like a flatscreen TV on a swivel mount and an espresso machine. The oversized bathrooms with their marble baths provide a pleasant refuge.
Rooms can be combined in various ways to create larger apartment-style accommodations, and guests can opt for personal butler service to round out a high-end experience. In that same spirit — and to compensate for their nonexistent restaurant — Margutta 54 offers breakfast delivery. This should ideally be enjoyed outside, along with an espresso, in the courtyard haunted by the world’s most creative ghosts.
