A mid-priced Prague favorite since 1995, the Hotel Maximilian is fresh off an extensive renovation, and is now not just sensible but also one of the more stylish options in town. The location is central, a few steps from Old Town Square on Haštalská, one of Prague’s oldest streets; yet behind that classic century-old facade the look is quietly contemporary, Art Deco-influenced, with crisp clean lines and classic modernist furnishings, from the Eames Management chairs in the business center to the Philippe Starck fixtures in the suite’s frosted-glass bathroom.

The guest rooms are handsome, in muted colors with dark wood accents and ceiling-height cherrywood headboards. Most rooms face inward toward the courtyard, and all are quite surprisingly well soundproofed. Flat-screen satellite televisions and DVD players are standard, as are ISDN connections and, in the redesigned bathrooms, 15-centimeter rain shower heads.

Facilities include a breakfast room looking out over a garden terrace, a drawing room complete with fireplace and honesty bar, and a library stocked with art and design books and a selection of contemporary Czech literature. Most unusual for Prague is the basement spa, offering flotation treatments in a seven-meter salt-water bath, and Thai massage courtesy of the Sabai massage studio.

Attentive reception staff; nice breakfast selection and service; good location for the Old City and Jewish Quarter.

What the hotel could do better

The single room was very small and had a shower only- no bath and not much room for storing items.

There was nothing I did not enjoy about this hotel. I utilized their pick-up at the airport and everything about our stay went like clock-work for the entire time of our stay. I only wished that we would have had the time to check out the hotel spa because it appeared to be to notch. I will have to leave that for next time. The location of the hotel was also superb.

Professional smooth check-in, non-smoking room as requested and clear information about the hotel, breakfast and facilities. Helpfull staff, of which some really know how to make your day. Nespresso coffee machine in the room made us feel like home.

What the hotel could do better

Carpet had spots of spilled coffee and furniture appeared like second hand (need a repaint for sure), despite this we gladly recommend the Maximillian hotel.

This hotel is part of the new Prague, not new in terms of its age or the neighborhood, but new in terms of the changing face of Prague. This city continues to get better, better shops, better coffee and great dining.

The Maximillian Hotel is perfectly located, 5 minutes walk to everywhere downtown. The rooms are appropriately sized for the price and they are very clean indeed.

The breakfast area is great, lots of quality food and helpful staff. I would definitely stay again.

We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match.
