To the ever-lengthening list of can’t-miss hideaways on the Sri Lankan coast, it’s time to add another: Maya Villa, on the south coast a few miles from Tangalle, is a stunning, secluded little escape, a five-room speck of a place on a century-old estate surrounded by paddy fields and unspoiled old growth. Architecturally speaking, it’s half new, half old; the original manor house is wedded to a new wing, but the transition is scarcely noticeable, as the interiors throughout hew to a consistently contemporary look, the clean lines and smooth expanses of concrete matched with modernist and antique furniture.

It’s a place for lounging, more than anything else, whether in the private shaded sitting areas or by the pool that bisects the two villas. Any game you can play on a lawn is playable here, from croquet to cricket, and yoga and Tai Chi instruction is available to anyone desiring a little instruction in the slow arts — not to mention some world-class birdwatching. And it’s also a place for staging an expedition or two, whether into the island’s interior or out to the coast. The beaches near Tangalle are a short drive away, as is some of the region’s finest whale- and dolphin-watching.

How to get there:
Maya Villa is located 3.5 hours away from Colombo airport. Transfers cost $110 USD per taxi. There is also an option of taking a sea plane (35 minutes from Colombo to Dikwella and then 20 minutes from Dikwella to Maya Villa). Alternatively, guests can fly to the Koggala airport (which is just outside Galle); this airport is a 1.5 hour drive to Maya Villa.
