Once an orphanage church in which Antonio Vivaldi gave music lessons, the Metropole was converted into a hotel at the end of the nineteenth century. It was known in Freud's day as the Casa Kirsch, and as the Metropoli was briefly enlisted as a military hospital during World War II. For the last thirty years, the Beggiato family has owned and operated the Metropole, and much of their staff remains to this day. The family's own collections of art and antiques adorn the rooms and common spaces. The Beggiatos are still active in the management of the hotel, lending to a level of intimacy unusual in a 70-room hotel.

There is no mistaking that this is Venice - the hotel has a private water taxi entrance, and overlooks the Bacino di San Marco, the lagoon in front of St. Mark's Square. To call the style of the hotel "baroque" would be to understate the level of ornate detail at work, with intricate trompe l'oeil paintings, period furniture, and fine fabrics decorating the rooms. The family's collections are on display: antique mirrors, porcelain teapots, fans, corkscrews, and "one of the most important" collections of crucifixes in all of Italy.

Bread, fruit, and cheese are served in a breakfast room next to the garden, which itself serves as an outdoor setting for lunch and dinner in the warmer months. The Met restaurant, featuring the Beggiato family's collection of antique musical instruments, is the choice during fall and winter. Tea is served daily in the Venetian lounge, and the Bar Zodiaco is open from 10:30 am until midnight.

Fine service and an atmosphere absolutely permeated with Venetian history are the strengths of the Metropole. This is in every way the antidote to the corporate hotel, with its antiseptic blend of faceless modern design and watered-down "local" flavor. Here you'll stay among Venetians, in a hotel which is unmistakably Venice through and through.

The location can't be beat. The atmosphere is great. The rooms are very nice but not quite as mice as the common areas. Restaurant was outstanding and bar area and drinks were top notch if old school.

What the hotel could do better

Rooms could be a little more special.

The location was great. The feel of the hotel was just as promised--like stepping back into a time capsule from a bygone era. The room overlooked the side canal, so it was quiet, yet had a nice view. The staff at the hotel were very helpful in suggesting restaurants, shops, providing directions, etc.

What the hotel could do better

    Nothing.

The staff was charming and always helpful. The hotel had a great location, a cozy vibe and was very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was also very well done and had something for everybody without being overdone or complicated.

What the hotel could do better

Met Restaurant was booked, and a lot of the vintage heirlooms were in glass cases, like in a museum. I thought it took away from the coziness of the hotel.

It's a nice hotel. The staff was very helpful and the outside garden and breakfast was great.

What the hotel could do better

The decor is a bit strange and the rooms were smaller and older looking. The internet is really expensive. The hotel is good, I just think it's over priced for what it is.

The location was great! The concierge coordinated our arrival with auto & private water taxi from the airport to the hotel--I certainly recommend this hassel-free service.

What the hotel could do better

Our "family" size room was large but had we seen a picture beforehand, we would have arranged for 2 rooms. It was only a bedroom and bath-with no private area, so 4 in one space allowed no one to sleep and not be wakened by others.

The decor of the foyer and indoor bars was exceptional as were the curios and collections.

It was close to Zaccharia ferry stop which has direct access to Marco Polo airport.

What the hotel could do better

The staff were rather abrupt and rude both over the phone and face-to-face.

While the foyer and downstairs communal areas are beautiful the actual bedrooms & corridors - though decorated in typical venetian style - are lacking. Guests shouldn't expect a typical venetian guesthouse atmosphere (like i was). The Metropole has always been a hotel and the rooms and layout reflects this. Given the price, i expected more.

The location is overly touristy with hawkers and canvasers lining the footpaths right up to the hotel. Given all the wonderful parts of Venice it's not worth staying here just to be near St Mark's Square.
