Names are funny things. It takes a certain audacity, a certain swagger, to intentionally give your resort an unappealing name. You wouldn’t likely consider staying at Crap Island, for example — though after a spell at Mosquito Beach, in Mexico’s Playa del Carmen, maybe you’d be up for giving it a try.

To start with, the mosquitos, thankfully, are merely figurative, while the beach is utterly literal — come evening time, day beds (or more properly night beds) are arranged on the sand for a bit of twilit lounging. In contrast to the big resorts in town, Mosquito Beach is a romantic little bolthole — the rooms are stylish, in masculine colors, decked out with French and Italian furnishings, and the adults-only policy certainly helps keep this 33-room hotel quiet.

In fact it’s a shame there aren’t more places like this one, especially in Mexico. The small size lends an intimacy that’s rare, and the focus on design sets Mosquito Beach apart. Traditional luxury fans might find the comforts a bit sparse, but between the beachfront bar and the in-room massages it’s hard to call it a rough life. The spa at the sister resort, Mosquito Blue, is open to Mosquito Beach guests, and the restaurant, set right down on the water, is something special indeed.
