Ski hotels were perhaps the last of all categories to embrace the modern-design boutique style. But more and more often these days they’re trading heavy lumber and hot cocoa for sleek contemporary style and an atmosphere that’s a bit more sophisticated than a bunch of overstuffed sofas gathered round a fire. For an example, check out Verbier, in the Swiss Alps — it’s home to a fair few cozy old lodges, but also the tremendously stylish Hotel Nevaï.
It’s located right in the heart of the village, so you can take all the typical ski stuff as read, including the quick walk to the lifts. It may feel a bit odd clomping around these minimalistic interiors in boots, but come après-ski all is explained — it’s a perfectly conducive environment for a couple of cocktails.
Rooms are chic but not overly delicate, with modern amenities like loaner iPods and docking stereos. The spa is essential for a bit of day-after rehabilitation, and in that area the Nevaï doesn’t disappoint. Add the Nevaï Bar as well as a stylish open-kitchen restaurant, and the package, though still boutique-sized, is more or less complete — and just next door is the Farm Club, long one of Verbier’s top nightspots.
