Old Bank Hotel
92-94 High Street
Oxford, England, UK
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Lively
44 Rooms
The first new hotel in the city centre in 135 years, the Old Bank Hotel sits on Oxford’s main street, the High. Behind the Georgian facade of the one-time Barclays bank building is a boutique hotel in a charmingly contemporary style, restrained in its elegance, as far from British country-house chintz as it is from ultra-modern hysterics.
Bedrooms are surprisingly large, decorated in creams and whites, with designer furnishings, huge beds and linen or velvet bed covers. Many rooms have inspiring views of Oxford’s colleges and spires, especially on higher floors, and the attic rooms have conspicuous beams and sloping ceilings. Satellite television and bedside radios and CD players are standard, and the marble bathrooms feature industrial-strength power showers. The hotel’s extensive collection of 20th century British artworks extends to the guest rooms, hung with black and white photographs or artist’s prints.
The hotel restaurant, Quod, centers around an oval-shaped zinc-topped bar, serving breakfast to hotel guests in the morning and Italian-influenced fare to Oxford’s in crowd at lunch and dinner. Hotel guests have priority, which is a good thing, as the restaurant takes reservations only during off-peak hours, and fills up quickly, especially on weekend evenings. Free parking, thankfully, is available for hotel guests in the Old Bank’s car park, and all of Oxford’s historic sights are at your feet.
