Back in the early days of Tablet we used to spend a fair bit of time explaining just what it was that made boutique hotels special. For just about as long as we’ve been online, Vancouver’s Opus has been on our short list of prime examples. And while in the intervening years the idea of the boutique hotel has been diluted a bit, its best ideas co-opted by everyone from B&Bs to the big chain hotels, time hasn’t diluted the Opus — this place is still full strength, as potent as it ever was.
Thanks to that, it’s joined the establishment, at least in the sense that it’s the first choice in Vancouver for visiting artists, touring musicians, and anyone who’s equally focused on both sides of the “luxury boutique” equation. Here that means a nightlife-friendly Yaletown location, a thorough redesign in vibrant Seventies-inspired tones, as well as creature comforts like Frette bathrobes and in-room espresso makers. It’s an environment where free-spirited rock stars and buttoned-up businesspeople feel equally at home — and it inspires, one hopes, a bit of unbuttoning in the latter.
Other updates include a newfound focus on technology — each room comes equipped not just with an iPad for in-room use, but a Samsung smartphone for wandering around town with, which is particularly helpful for Americans whose data plans end at the border — as well as a new Northern Italian restaurant, the highly acclaimed La Pentola della Quercia. It’s a hotel that’s not afraid to make some changes in the name of staying up to date — which is why, even now, it still feels brand new.
