Some other Greek isles are known best for excess. But for something a little more low-key, with a touch of Old World aristocracy, look no further than the Orloff, on the tiny island of Spetses off the coast of the Peloponnese. The resort shares a name with the three brothers who developed it, members of one of the island’s oldest and wealthiest families, descendants of the formidable heroine of the Greek War of Independence, fiery Laskarina Bouboulina. And in designing the resort, they’ve worked to preserve a connection to their history, which is, to a certain extent, the history of the island itself.

The tile-roofed stone buildings are replications of the original 19th-century mansion, and the courtyard, centered around the swimming pool, shelters centuries-old olive trees and features traditional pebble-mosaics set into the ground. Fortunately, the commitment to historical authenticity does not extend to the interior design — you won’t be resting on Madam Orloff’s lumpy chaise longue, or hanging your clothes in a dusty armoire. The rooms favor a spare, geometric look, heavy on grey and neutral tones, with occasional blocks of color and details in wood and wire. A range of lodging options are available, from the standard double room to the House, a three-story, five-bedroom affair with a view of the sea and a private garden.

The resort serves breakfast until late in the morning, but does not have a formal restaurant. There are a number of dining options nearby — but don’t expect to drive there, as cars are all but banned on the island. If you want to venture further than your feet will take you — to explore the pine-forested hills, for example, or the cobbled streets of the main town — bicycles, mopeds and, yes, horses and carriages are available for rent.

How to get there:

Spetses does not have an airport and is most easily reached by ferry from Athens.

Ferries from Athens' port, Pireaus, take approximately 1.5-4 hours. For more information about ferry schedules, and to purchase tickets in advance of your trip, we recommend the following website: Paleologos
