Rather improbably situated on Queensland’s Gold Coast is one of the more eccentric hotel ventures we’ve ever seen — the Palazzo Versace, a monument to Milan-via-Miami haute decadence, is a joint venture between the eponymous fashion house and an Australian property developer, and is roughly one part tribute to the late Gianni Versace and two parts over-the-top luxury-resort fantasy.
It’s also one part showcase for the Versace home furnishing collection, and as such, it’s about as far from trendy modern minimalism as it’s possible to get. Sheer opulence carries the day, from the intricate polished hardwood flooring to the Italian antique chandeliers. The sprawling public spaces and every one of the more than two hundred guest rooms are furnished with pieces from the Versace collection — everything from the beds and sofas to the toiletries and the glassware.
Needless to say the rooms, suites and condominiums are as luxurious as can be. There’s no shortage of space, and the bathrooms are fit for a queen, in marble and gold with spa baths and separate showers. Suites very quickly grow to excess, with sitting rooms, dining rooms and guest bathrooms, and the condominium suites are essentially self-contained residences with full kitchens, some adding absurd extras like private plunge pools or rooftop terraces with hot tubs.
The Palazzo Versace is a self-contained experience, with the facilities to match: the Salus Per Aquum spa offers a range of health and beauty treatments as well as tai chi, yoga and fitness programs, and any number of outdoor activities can be organized, from surf school to seaplane excursions. Three restaurants and two bars keep guests well-fed and lubricated, and there’s a Versace boutique, for when you’re feeling under-dressed (or decide you can’t live without the bed you’ve been sleeping in).

What I liked:
The smell, simply devine!
What the hotel could do better:
We were upgraded with a much better (larger) suite with a view after I complained that the room on the first night was not up to standard. Not what you would expect when you pay $560 for a suite and you get a view of their rubbish bins! I was not impressed but they did make up for it on night 2. But however they did not offer any discounts on the room for night one.
