After a successful dip into the hospitality pool with the Palihouse Holloway in West Hollywood, the Paligroup is back with what’s perhaps a more traditional vision, both in form and in function. The Palihotel operates like a classic boutique hotel, which means guests spend more time in the common spaces and less in the rooms — the casual Southern-style restaurant, The Hart and the Hunter, is the hub of social activity, its power to draw a crowd multiplied by the scent of warm, buttery biscuits occasionally wafting outside.
The rooms come in double and queen layouts, both compact and urban, some with courtyard views and others with outdoor verandas. While the look isn’t modern, exactly, it is very much of the moment. This decade-spanning, bohemian-rustic style is a breath of fresh air after years of boutique-hotel minimalism. And the real genius of this place only becomes apparent when it’s time to sign the bill — at this price it’s hard to think of another hotel that’s its equal.
If you’re a Hollywood lifer the location might feel ever so slightly peripheral, compared to the original Palihouse, which is a few blocks to the north and west, and more decidedly in the thick of things. But for out-of-towners on a retail bender this stretch of Melrose is shopping paradise; anyway, as the saying goes, nobody walks in L.A.

What I liked:
Location and decor - stylish without being trendy. The rooms are pretty generous in terms of size for an LA boutique hotel. I appreciated the little touch of including ear plugs with the amenity kit - it can get boisterous at night in this area, and the ear plugs helped me sleep more soundly.

What I liked:
It's funky. It fits the area of Melrose. It's got that swanky kind of feel to it. You can tell there is history in the hotel. It use to be a retirement community for the elderly, then a hostel, then they converted it, but you feel that, yet not in a bad way. It's got some history to it. And they did an excellent job redesigning it. but even though it's a new hotel, it's not "new" the walls have history. Again, not a bad thing. I liked the vibe. a cool, funky vibe. Great.
What the hotel could do better:
I am just personally a fan of hotels that have MOVIE SELECTIONS on the TV. Where you can buy a movie and watch it. When almost every airplane flying today gives you this option, and almost every TV in peoples homes, I feel that Hotels should offer it. It's part of the get-away-experience. You spend a night ordering in room service and watching some new-release-flick. So I wish they had that. Also, the area doesn't have a lot of foot-traffic places to check out or eat at. So have a bike, or a car, or a taxi ready if you want to go out in LA. No subway stops near by.
