One island, one resort — that’s Pangkor Laut’s motto, and it’s the key to its appeal. This secluded island resort, five kilometers off the Malaysian mainland in the Strait of Malacca, is surrounded by protected two-million-year-old rainforest, the kind of unspoiled natural paradise that it’s hard to believe still exists anywhere in the world.

Villas dot the hillsides, line the beach, and spread on stilts into the sea, connected by wooden walkways. They’re all spacious and traditional in style, elegantly outfitted in wood floors and ornate dark wood trim, with king beds and enormous bathtubs, as well as private balconies with views of the forest or the sea. There’s a CD player, and a music library available, but no television — you come here to unplug. Nowhere is this more true, perhaps, than the Spa Villas, overwater bungalows with direct access to Pangkor Laut’s legendary spa.

Legendary may seem too strong a word, but this is a spa often mentioned as one of the world’s finest. Newly expanded into four-acre complex, the Spa Village offers every treatment you’ve heard of and inevitably some you haven’t, from Ayurvedic and Balinese treatments to the Shanghai Scrub and beyond. A trip to Pangkor Laut would be incomplete without some sort of visit to the Spa Village, and if you can’t come away refreshed, then there may be something deeply wrong with you.

Should, somehow, the villas and suites of the main resort prove underwhelming, you may wish to try one of the Estates, eight separate residences located on another side of the island from the resort proper. Each of these is a discrete indoor-outdoor compound, complete with two dedicated attendants and one personal chef — sure to impress even the most jaded VIP.
