Never happy simply being America’s second city, Chicago is the sort of place that continually goes out of its way to remind you of its status as one of the world’s great cities — and from the Park Hyatt, just off the Magnificent Mile of North Michigan Avenue, it’s impossible to put up much of an argument.

As if to underscore the point, Gerhard Richter’s 1968 painting of the Piazza del Duomo in Milan presides over the Park Hyatt’s imposing modernist lobby — a choice that would feel wishful or oddly escapist in some lesser Midwestern cities.

From there it’s up 18-plus floors to the sleek, contemporary guest rooms, each with a stunning city view, the best ones facing east toward the Water Tower and Lake Michigan. There’s a subtle undercurrent of modern minimalism along with some classic mid-century Eames and Mies furnishings that look perfectly at home against the backdrop of Chicago’s architecturally distinguished skyline.

One of the city’s most sophisticated restaurants is on the seventh floor, with a bird’s-eye view of the Magnificent Mile, along with a busy cocktail lounge and interiors right out of the pages of a design magazine. Top-flight modern luxury, a phenomenal location and the awe-inspiring views combine to make the Park Hyatt many travelers’ first choice — and from here it’s easy to forget about New York altogether, and fall in love with Chicago, for the first time or all over again.
