If it's a secluded island getaway you're after, it's hard to beat this private island resort, in the British Virgin Islands, just 20 minutes from Tortola by boat. Peter Island is the kind of place that is perenially on one “best of” list after another, and is the kind of place where you can expect to be in fairly exclusive company.

For one thing, the island is huge, almost two thousand acres; and with a capacity of barely over one hundred guests, and several beaches to choose from, you're not likely to feel cramped. Still, if you absolutely must ensure solitude, try Honeymoon Beach, reachable only by boat, and reserved for one couple at a time, with a phone box right there on the beach to call for your ride back to the hotel at the end of the day.

The cottages are vast, and though they contain multiple units, guests will be hard pressed to find evidence of their neighbors' presence. There are private villas, though, and all lodgings have at least a private balcony or terrace. None, thankfully, have television, which is as it should be, though all are air-conditioned, with king beds.

This is a private island, and three meals a day are included in the rate, whether in the dressed-up Tradewinds restaurant or the casual and charmingly named Deadman's Beach Bar and Grill. To explore other options, you will have to venture over to Tortola — the ferry runs frequently, all day, so this is not exactly an ordeal.

As far as leisure activities — on the island there are miles of bike paths and hiking trails, as well as facilities for any water activity imaginable. Sailing is big — in fact half the island is a yacht club — so snorkeling and scuba excursions are easily arranged. Inactivity seems to be the most popular choice, though, and it's hard to imagine an environment more conducive to idleness than this exclusive retreat.
