For many guests, the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel occupies the perfect location. The Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone is the heart of Shanghai’s financial industries, and the Shangri-La sits along the banks of the Huangpu River, overlooking the legendary riverfront buildings of the Bund and the Orient Pearl TV Tower.

A modern scratch-built hotel has no excuse for small rooms—no problem here, as the most humble standards start at 400 square feet, with generous closets and marble bathrooms and plenty of horizontal space, from countertops to office-quality desks. Furnishings are elegant and contemporary, and the décor is modern Far East deluxe, in creams and beiges, with ornate woodwork and a sparing selection of antiques and reproductions. Broadband internet is standard, as are separate tubs and showers. Top-floor rooms, naturally, have the superior views, and views of the Bund come at a slight premium—$20 US is slight indeed, compared to the nightly rate.

As we’ve come to expect from the top Far East hotels, service is the Shangri-La’s strong suit—staffers are efficient and multilingual. Three restaurants, one nightclub, a business center and a health club round out the facilities, and all of Pudong is at your feet. The one drawback with respect to location; guests with business in Puxi, across the river, will find daytime traffic a bit daunting, though the subway stops practically just outside the hotel.
