Qualia

Until recently none of the Whitsunday Islands’ lodging options offered quite enough luxury to match the jaw-dropping Great Barrier Reef setting. But with the addition of Qualia, on Hamilton Island, the package is now complete. 

Situated at the northern tip of the island, Qualia enjoys its own private peninsula with coast or beach on three sides. The leeward villas provide spacious, south-facing “great room” spaces with a giant adjoining verandah; windward villas improve upon that by adding a plunge pool on the balcony, and a separate bedroom and dining room inside. Also available is a commodious Beach House option for group affairs, complete with two bedrooms, a large private pool and dining space for ten.

Architecturally, Qualia is unobtrusive and unpretentious, just discreet wooden buildings tucked into the jungle foliage. All accommodations are finished with pleasant wood accents and comfy contemporary furnishings in a variety of eye-catching colors — there’s a fortunate lack of beige here. 

Now while it would be easy to spend all one’s time relaxing in any of these aforementioned villas, that’s not the recommended approach. Of course the Great Barrier Reef environs are just screaming to be explored, and Qualia’s attentive staff are happy to get you suited up and on your way. Neighboring Dent Island offers some of the world’s best golf, and there’s always some quality time to be spent even more motionless on the beach or in the first-class spa.

And after a tough day of exploring sea or land, Qualia’s two restaurants can provide a gracious and satiating end to any itinerary. The Long Pavilion is the haute-cuisine option, regularly hosting culinary events and serving inventive, contemporary Australian fare. Down the hill, the Pebble Beach cafe can be found adjacent to the pool and gym, providing a dressed-down but still creative menu and a bar that’s particularly welcome at sunset.

Qualia is located on the northern tip of Hamilton Island (located in the Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Queensland).

There are direct flights from Cairns, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney to Hamilton Island Airport.
